Tanzania’s basketball sensation, Dar City, has booked a spot in the Round of 16 of the Road to Basketball Africa League (BAL), set to kick off this November.

The team secured their place with an 83-70 win over Namuwongo Blazers in a thrilling match played yesterday at the Tanganyika International School (IST) indoor court in Masaki, Dar es Salaam.

Dar City began their campaign with a commanding 102-50 victory over Djabal, signaling their intent and determination to compete at the highest level.

Speaking ahead of the knockout stage, Assistant Head Coach Mohamed Mbwana said the team is now focused on maintaining momentum and performing at their best to reach the finals and vie for the East African championship.

“Our target is clear: to perform excellently, raise the national flag high, and represent Tanzania with pride on the continental stage,” Mbwana said.

He added, “The competition has been intense, especially against Namuwongo, which made strong signings. But our recruitment strategy, combined with the talent of our players, has delivered this success.”

Mbwana noted that although Dar City is relatively new to professional basketball, the team has already achieved significant results internationally.

“Teams like Pazi and JKT have participated before but did not reach this stage. We aim to set a new standard and perform strongly across Africa,” he said.

Plans are underway to further strengthen the squad by adding players where necessary to boost competitiveness.

Meanwhile, the players have been granted a one-week break to spend time with their families before resuming preparations for the Round of 16.

Mbwana also thanked Tanzanians who supported the team at the arena and online through FIBA’s live streaming, noting that their encouragement was vital in helping the team secure this victory.

He urged fans to continue cheering the team on as they pursue continental glory.
