The Government of Tanzania has achieved major milestones in expanding electricity to rural and peri-urban areas, with plans to ensure all sub-villages across the country have power by 2030.

Speaking during Customer Service Week at the Rural Energy Agency (REA) headquarters in Dodoma on October 8, 2025, Acting Director General of REA, Mr. Jones Olotu, said that all 12,318 villages in Tanzania now have electricity, marking a historic 100 percent coverage at the village level.

“Tanzania has 64,359 sub-villages, of which 37,328, or 58 percent, already enjoy electricity access. Efforts to expand power supply to remaining areas are ongoing,” said Mr. Olotu.

He stressed that completing sub-village electrification by 2030 will empower citizens, boost livelihoods, and contribute to the national economy.

In addition to electrification, the Government has provided 20,000 solar systems for residents of island communities, while promoting clean cooking energy to reduce health, environmental, and economic risks associated with unsafe energy sources.

The REA is also supporting the construction of small fuel stations in rural areas to enable safe storage of petroleum products.

Other initiatives include the sale of 200,000 improved cookstoves with 80–85 percent subsidies and 452,455 six-kilogram gas cylinders sold at 50 percent subsidy across mainland Tanzania.

As part of Customer Service Week, REA staff decorated their offices to engage citizens and showcase government services, highlighting Tanzania’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, and affordable energy to all.

“These efforts reflect the Government’s dedication to ensuring that every Tanzanian, whether in villages or islands, has access to electricity and clean energy solutions,” Mr. Olotu said.
