By The Respondent Reporter, Dodoma. The government has reminded Tanzanians and foreign visitors travelling abroad to ensure they hold valid yellow fever vaccination certificates before departure, as part of efforts to safeguard public health and comply with international travel regulations.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry of Health said the yellow fever vaccine remains an important preventive measure for all travellers heading to countries that require proof of vaccination. The disease, transmitted by infected mosquitoes, can cause severe illness and death if left untreated.
According to the National Guidelines on Yellow Fever Vaccination, revised in November 2023, and in line with recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO), one dose of the vaccine provides lifelong protection.
“The Ministry wishes to remind the public that those who have already been vaccinated against yellow fever do not need to be vaccinated again. They only need to carry a valid International Certificate of Vaccination (Yellow Card),” the statement read.
The Ministry also urged all travellers to ensure their certificates are genuine and obtained from designated health facilities such as Muhimbili National Hospital, Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, and vaccination centres at international airports and seaports.
“This will help travellers avoid inconveniences at border crossings and airports,” the Ministry noted, urging the public to take the vaccine at least ten days before travel to ensure it provides full protection.
The statement, signed by Roida Andusamile, Head of the Government Communication Unit in the Ministry of Health, stressed that there is no requirement for re-vaccination if a traveller already holds a valid certificate issued by the Ministry.
