The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the Nyakasungwa Ward councilor election in Buchosa Constituency, Mwanza Region, following the death of Mr. Feruzi Rajabu Kamizula, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) candidate, on October 9, 2025.
The election, initially scheduled for October 10, was suspended immediately in accordance with Section 71(1) of the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections Act No. 1 of 2024. As a result, all electoral activities, including campaigns by other candidates, were halted.
INEC has outlined a new timeline for the by-election. Nomination forms for councilor candidates representing CCM in Nyakasungwa Ward will be available from October 18 to October 24, 2025.
Campaign activities will resume from October 25 until October 28, but will be temporarily suspended during the national general election period from October 29 to November 1 to allow for voting and the announcement of results.
Campaigning will then continue until December 29, ahead of the by-election, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
The Commission emphasized that the new nomination process does not affect any candidate who was lawfully nominated in the previous process unless they choose to withdraw.
INEC also reminded political parties, candidates, and all stakeholders to strictly follow the Constitution, electoral laws, regulations, and codes of conduct to ensure a credible and orderly electoral process.
