The government has disbursed TZS 3.5 trillion ($1.4 billion) by 2024 to support youth economic empowerment, up from 904 billion shillings in 2021, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Friday.
Speaking at the National Youth Week celebrations in the southern highlands city of Mbeya, Majaliwa said the funds have provided young people with access to capital for small enterprises and other income-generating activities, helping to lift household incomes and spur economic growth.
“The government recognizes that young people are the backbone of the nation’s workforce and the foundation of our development journey,” Majaliwa said. “When empowered and properly prepared, they can drive the implementation of Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
He said youth are making significant contributions across key sectors including agriculture, business, technology, sports and the creative industries.
“In innovation and technology, young people are leading the use of digital tools such as artificial intelligence and modern communication systems, accelerating positive change in society and the economy,” he added.
Majaliwa called on institutions and partners to ensure youth are fully involved in decision-making processes — not only as beneficiaries of government programmes, but also as innovators and leaders of social and economic transformation.
During a visit to the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) exhibition stand, Majaliwa urged the institution and other education providers to prioritize training opportunities for persons with disabilities by providing accessible learning materials and facilities.
“I have seen young people with disabilities who have great skills and talents,” he said. “Parents should allow their children with disabilities to pursue education, and institutions should help them develop practical skills to earn a living.”
Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disabilities Minister Ridhiwani Kikwete said the government values the youth as a major national asset.
“If their potential and talents are properly nurtured, they will build a competitive and prosperous nation,” he said.
