President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan will lead the national Uhuru Torch lighting in Mbeya on October 14.
The event will mark the climax of Youth Week and commemorate the 26th anniversary of the death of the Father of the Nation, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office for Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities, Ridhiwani Kikwete, told journalists in Mbeya that the celebrations will begin with a Holy Mass at Mwanjelwa Catholic Parish in memory of Mwalimu Nyerere.
“The events will peak on October 14. The Holy Mass will start at 12:15 p.m., followed by the lighting of the Uhuru Torch at Sokoine Memorial Ground,” Kikwete said.
The national Youth Week celebrations will be officially launched on October 10 at Uhindini Grounds by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.
Residents of Mbeya and neighbouring regions are encouraged to attend in large numbers and explore the opportunities showcased at exhibition stalls.
Kikwete said the Uhuru Torch is a symbol of unity, peace, and national solidarity. It continues to inspire citizens to work together on projects in agriculture, livestock, sustainable fishing, infrastructure, health, education, water, electricity, and environmental conservation.
“This year, the Uhuru Torch will promote development by inspecting and launching national projects. It will also raise awareness on issues such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, drug abuse, corruption, and nutrition for healthy communities,” he added.
The theme for the 2025 Uhuru Torch Run is: “Participate in the 2025 General Election in Peace and Tranquility.”
