New strategies to strengthen Tanzania’s forestry and beekeeping sectors

By Saidi Lufune, Dodoma

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism has unveiled targeted strategies to enhance Tanzania’s forestry and beekeeping sectors, focusing on sustainable resource management and collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including other government ministries, private sector actors, civil society, and local communities.

The move aims to boost national economic growth while safeguarding the environment for future generations.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Dodoma on October 10, 2025, Assistant Director of the Forestry Department, Mr. Seleboni Mushi, highlighted the ministry’s efforts to address challenges facing the forestry sector.

The meeting brought together multiple stakeholders to discuss obstacles to sectoral development and strategies for effective resource management.

“Forestry has contributed significantly to national income, job creation, and climate change mitigation. However, the sector faces challenges such as illegal logging, encroachment of livestock into forest reserves, land conversion for agriculture, and unregulated mining activities,” Mr. Mushi said.

To counter these challenges, the ministry continues to implement programs on tree planting and restoration of degraded areas, working closely with central and local governments, private companies, civil society organizations, and communities.

“Maintaining this collaborative approach will strengthen the forestry sector’s contribution to the economy and environmental conservation, benefiting both present and future generations,” he emphasized.

The strategies also aim to develop beekeeping as a sustainable source of income for rural communities, creating new opportunities while promoting ecological balance.
