Mining companies urged to prioritize community benefits for sustainable growth

Mining companies in Tanzania have been urged to place local communities at the center of their operations to ensure sustainable development and economic growth.

Dr. Janet Lekashingo, Chairperson of the Minerals Commission, made the call on October 2, 2025, during a training program on Community Engagement in the Mining Sector and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), held for industry stakeholders in Ruvuma region.

“Mining is not just about extracting resources. It is about creating opportunities, protecting the environment, and improving the well-being of local communities,” Dr. Lekashingo said.

“Through transparency, fairness, and collaboration, mineral resources can become a foundation for national prosperity and a source of livelihood for every Tanzanian.”he added

The training highlighted how responsible mining practices can boost local economies by creating jobs, transferring technology, and building skills.

Dr. Lekashingo stressed that modern investments, including industrial development and technology adoption, must go hand in hand with corporate accountability to ensure communities and the environment benefit.

The initiative aligns with the Sixth Phase Government’s agenda under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, aimed at maximizing the mining sector’s contribution to the national economy while supporting sustainable development.

Dr. Theresia Numbi, Chairperson of the Committee on Tanzanian Engagement in the Mining Sector, said that the 2010 Mining Act, strengthened by the 2018 Tanzanian Participation Regulations, has improved local involvement in the sector.

“These reforms have enabled Tanzanians to secure employment, access skills development, benefit from technology transfer, and understand their role in decision-making,” she noted.

Ruvuma Regional Government Secretary representative, Jumanne Mwankhoo, welcomed the training, saying it was the first of its kind in the region.

He pledged to ensure the lessons shared translate into real benefits for communities.

As Tanzania’s mining sector expands, experts say active community engagement and strict corporate social responsibility practices are critical for turning mineral wealth into long-term national development.
