Steven Mengele, Chairperson of the Mama Ongea na Mwanao Foundation, has called on Tanzanians to use social media responsibly to promote national development, social harmony, and peaceful participation in the forthcoming general elections.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Monday, October 20, 2025, Mengele stressed that this appeal comes at a critical moment as the country prepares for elections, a period often marked by heightened political activity and widespread social media engagement.

“This is a defining moment for our nation. As we approach the general elections, let us use social media responsibly to share ideas, promote peace, and encourage civic participation rather than spreading hatred or misinformation,” Mengele said.

He emphasized that every Tanzanian has both a constitutional right and a civic duty to participate in elections, highlighting that voting is one of the most effective ways to strengthen democracy and foster national unity.

“Voting is not only a right but also a national responsibility. I urge all eligible Tanzanians to turn out and vote peacefully, with respect and love for our country,” he added.

Mengele also highlighted the growing influence of social media in shaping public opinion during elections. He urged users to verify information before sharing and to avoid engaging in divisive discussions that could escalate tensions.

“Social media has become a powerful tool in shaping how people think and act. It should be a space for education, awareness, and constructive dialogue not for insults or propaganda,” he said.

The foundation, in collaboration with government institutions and civil society, continues to run campaigns promoting responsible digital behavior, ethical communication, and the importance of peace during elections.

“Our goal as a foundation is to ensure that social media contributes positively to peace and national unity. We are working closely with partners to educate the public about online ethics and civic responsibility,” Mengele explained.

He called on young people, who make up the largest group of social media users, to use their platforms to inspire others, share accurate information, and encourage peaceful participation in elections.

“Young people hold the digital voice of this generation. I encourage them to be ambassadors of truth and peace, to use their platforms to motivate others to vote, and to respect the democratic process,” he said.

Mengele further emphasized that social media can serve as a tool for economic empowerment, creativity, and civic education if used responsibly.

“Let us use the digital space to empower ourselves and build the Tanzania we want. Our actions online reflect who we are as a people peace-loving, responsible, and patriotic citizens,” he concluded.

The Mama Ongea na Mwanao Foundation has long been at the forefront of social initiatives promoting family values, youth empowerment, and ethical communication, with ongoing efforts to support peacebuilding and civic education across the country.
