Mbarali District Council in Mbeya Region is ensuring that citizens benefit economically from the government’s 10 percent loan scheme by working closely with the District Security Committee and the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (TAKUKURU).
The initiative aims to prevent public servants from taking advantage of the program.
Council Executive Director Raymond Mweli, speaking on October 20, 2025, said the loan scheme, reinstated by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, is intended to uplift citizens’ livelihoods and strengthen the local economy.
He stressed that the Council has put in place strong measures to ensure funds reach the intended beneficiaries.
“The distribution of these loans follows strict procedures under management regulations. I have coordinated with the District Security Committee and TAKUKURU to ensure no public servant becomes a beneficiary of this program,” Mweli said.
He added that the Council regularly convenes meetings with stakeholders, including TAKUKURU officers, council experts, and village leaders, to ensure every eligible citizen can access loans without obstacles.
Mweli warned that strict disciplinary action would be taken against any public servant or officer found obstructing citizens from obtaining the loans.
“We strictly follow the law to ensure the loans are distributed according to regulations. Borrowers are also provided with guidance on how to use the funds effectively and repay on time,” he emphasized.
Given that more than 80 percent of Mbarali residents depend on agriculture, the Council has prioritized access for farming groups.
“Many women and youth groups request loans for agricultural activities. We have instructed that they receive priority, as farming contributes significantly to the Council’s revenue,” Mweli noted.
Gwimile Ibrahim, a rice farmer from Ubaruku Ward, said the loans have transformed his life. “These loans have enabled me to educate my children and improve my family’s income. I repay on time so others can benefit as well. I urge fellow farmers to be honest and value this opportunity,” he said.
The 10 percent loan scheme is proving to be a vital tool for economic empowerment in Mbarali while boosting the district’s revenue.
