Tanzania’s national boxing team, “Faru Weusi”, marked a strong performance at the East Africa Regional Boxing Championships in Nairobi 2025, with four of its eight boxers advancing to the semifinals.

Ezra Paulo led the charge in the Lightweight (60kg) category, defeating Kenya A’s Washington Wandera in a tense split decision, 3-2, to secure his place in the next round.

In the Flyweight (51kg) division, Azizi Chala delivered a commanding performance, winning 5-0 against DR Congo’s Tulembekwa Zola

King Lucas Mwajobaga continued Tanzania’s winning streak in the Light Welterweight (63.5kg) category, overpowering Gabon’s Engo Mba Laurent with a unanimous 5-0 points decision.

Kassim Mbundwike also advanced in the Light Middleweight (71kg) division after his opponent, DR Congo’s Mazongo Anderson, failed to show up for the bout, giving Mbundwike a walkover victory.

Tanzania’s other team members, however, faced tough competition. George Mbonabucha (Featherweight 57kg) fell to Kenya B’s Kumbo Mwinyi, Emmanuel Augostino (Heavyweight 92kg) lost to Uganda’s Abdoul Ringo, and Juma Athumani (Light Fly 48kg) was defeated by Kenya A’s Abednego Kyalo.

With the semifinals now set, Faru Weusi’s quartet is aiming to continue Tanzania’s strong showing and bring home medals from the regional championships.
