Vice President calls for peace and unity during memorial service for late Bishop

Vice President of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Mpango, alongside his wife Mama Mbonimpaye Mpango, used the memorial service of the late retired Lutheran Bishop, Dr. Stephen Munga, to call on Tanzanians to uphold peace, unity, and civic responsibility ahead of the upcoming General Election. 

The service was held in Maramba, Mkinga District, Tanga Region.

The ceremony, led by the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Tanzania, Bishop Maimbo Mndolwa, brought together leaders from various faiths, including Bishop Dr. Alex Malasusa of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Catholic Bishop Thomas Kiangio of Tanga Diocese, and Sheikh Muhsin Mohamed, Secretary of the Mkinga District Muslim Council (BAKWATA). Hundreds of community members also attended.


Addressing the congregation, Dr. Mpango highlighted the critical role of religious institutions in promoting national cohesion. 

He encouraged leaders of all faiths to continue praying for peace, stability, and the success of national development initiatives, while urging citizens to participate responsibly in the October elections.


“Peace is the foundation of every social and economic activity, including religious gatherings. Let us all safeguard our nation’s harmony before, during, and after the elections,” Dr. Mpango said.

The memorial also celebrated the life and service of the late Bishop Dr. Stephen Munga, who passed away on September 20, 2025, leaving a legacy of dedication to faith and community development.
