Kinywe Mahenge graphite mine to bring jobs and growth to local communities

Tanzanians in Morogoro Region are set to benefit directly from the launch of the Kinywe Mahenge graphite mine, a TZS 1.3 trillion investment that promises jobs, skills development, and economic opportunities for thousands of local residents.

The project, led by Faru Graphite Corporation in partnership with Black Rock Mining Limited, with the government holding a 16% stake, is expected to employ more than 900 Tanzanians permanently, while indirectly supporting over 4,500 people through local supply chains, from transporters to small businesses.

Minister of Minerals Anthony Peter Mavunde said the mine is more than a resource project; it is a platform to empower Tanzanians.

“Our priority is that Tanzanians benefit first. This mine will create jobs, provide training, and support local businesses,” he said.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Malima described the project as a milestone for the region.

“Kinywe Mahenge will improve infrastructure, stimulate local entrepreneurship, and open doors for long-term economic growth for our communities,” he said.

The Minister also called on Faru Graphite to strictly follow local content regulations and corporate social responsibility measures, including hiring local workers and sourcing materials and services from nearby villages, ensuring that citizens are at the center of development.

Treasury Registrar Nehemiah Mchechu emphasized that the public-private partnership safeguards national interests while attracting responsible investment, ensuring both community and national benefits.

The mine is also expected to generate significant government revenue through taxes, royalties, and dividends, estimated at TZS 7 trillion over its operational life, funds that will support essential social services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure for Tanzanians.

Kinywe Mahenge demonstrates how Tanzania’s natural resources can drive local development, improve livelihoods, and create opportunities for ordinary citizens while contributing to global clean-energy solutions.
