Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Dr. James Mataragio, has directed the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) and its subsidiary company, Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC), to ensure that all equipment for geothermal resource exploration at the Lake Ngozi project arrives on time

Dr. Mataragio issued the directive today, October 22, 2025, during an inspection visit to ongoing works at the project in Rungwe District, Mbeya Region, stressing that exploration activities to be completed within the planned schedule.

“You must complete this project on time due to its national significance. When implementing geothermal projects, we must remember that we are also executing the National Energy Policy of 2015, which mandates that Tanzania generates electricity using a mixed generation mix, of which geothermal is one component,” said Dr. Mataragio.

Regarding the delayed arrival of exploration equipment at the Lake Ngozi project, the project will generate 70 megawatts of electricity.

Dr. Mataragio also instructed that all project equipment be procured and delivered to the site immediately.

He also noted that the implementation of geothermal projects is outlined in the National Energy Compact, which runs through 2030, under which Tanzania is expected to have 130 megawatts generated from geothermal resources.

The National Development Vision 2050 directs the country to utilize a diverse mix of energy sources.

Meanwhile, TGDC Managing Director, Mr. Mathew Mwangomba, said that the government’s directives will be effectively implemented to ensure the project is completed on time.

Describing the progress of geothermal exploration at the project, Mr. Mwangomba stated that it has reached 60% to achieve geothermal resource reserves.

“We expect to complete exploration of all three wells within six months,” said Mr. Mwangomba.

During the visit, the Deputy Secretary-General was accompanied by the Commissioner of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mr. Innocent Luoga, and officials from the Ministry of Energy and TANESCO.
