The Government has intensified efforts to safeguard Tanzanians against disasters through comprehensive policies, laws, strategies, and key infrastructure projects, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has said.

Speaking during celebrations of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction at City Park Garden in Mbeya, Majaliwa said the Government’s actions aim to protect lives, secure property, and preserve national resources.

“The measures we are implementing will strengthen community resilience against disasters, saving lives, property, and the nation’s resources,” he said.

Among key steps, the Prime Minister highlighted the updating of national disaster management documents, including the National Disaster Management Policy (2025 edition), the National Disaster Management Strategy (2022–2027), and the National Preparedness and Response Plan (2022).

Majaliwa also noted improvements in weather forecasting by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), which now achieves 85 percent accuracy, helping reduce disaster impacts by over 30 percent.

The Government has further enhanced early warning systems with modern equipment and technology, including a Disaster Monitoring and Early Warning Center linked to regional hubs across Africa.

Major climate-resilient infrastructure projects are also underway, including the Kidunda Dam (TZS 329.47 billion), Farkwa Dam (TZS 312.08 billion), and the Victoria-Simiyu Water Project (TZS 440 billion).

In agriculture, the Government is promoting resilience through irrigation schemes, distribution of improved seeds, early warning systems, and partnerships with smallholder farmers.

“The Fire and Rescue Force has also been strengthened with modern equipment, technology, and training to improve emergency response and fire-fighting capabilities,” Majaliwa added.

He called on the private sector to join in disaster-resilient investments, including insurance and compliance with Government guidelines.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, and Coordination), William Lukuvi, said the celebrations aim to mobilize all stakeholders in disaster management activities, while ensuring communities, including youth, are trained in prevention, preparedness, and recovery.

United Nations representative Sandra Hakim commended the collaborative work of local government officials, community leaders, civil society, the UN, and international partners in building disaster resilience.

Earlier, Prime Minister Majaliwa inspected preparations for the finale of the torch relay and the commemoration of the nation’s founding father, set to take place at CCM Sokoine Grounds in Mbeya.
