Uhuru Stadium renovation hits 90% completion, set to restore glory

By Victoria Godfrey

Renovation works at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam have reached 90 percent completion, bringing the iconic venue closer to regaining its former status as a hub for national and international sports.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports and Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, visited the stadium on October 13, 2025, to assess progress.

He was accompanied by the Ministry’s Deputy Secretary-General, Methusela Ntonda.

“The government is closely monitoring this project to ensure it meets international standards. Our goal is to restore Uhuru Stadium to a level befitting major sporting events,” Mr. Msigwa said during the visit.

The renovation covers several key upgrades, including the installation of modern floodlights, high-quality artificial turf, a refurbished running track, new seating, renovated toilets, updated gates, and replacement of perimeter tiles.

This project is part of the Sixth Phase Government’s wider strategy to improve sports infrastructure nationwide.

Under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the initiative aims to position sports as a driver for employment creation and economic growth, while providing Tanzanians with world-class venues for athletics, football, and other sporting events.

Once completed, Uhuru Stadium will not only serve athletes and fans but also strengthen Tanzania’s reputation as a host of major regional and international competitions.
