Tanzanians will pay less for petrol and diesel this October after the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) announced a new drop in fuel prices, extending the relief that began in recent months.
According to EWURA Director General Dr. James Mwainyekule, petrol has gone down by TZS 55 per litre while diesel has dropped by TZS 50 per litre.
He explained that the reduction comes mainly from lower foreign exchange costs, which have fallen by 5.10 percent, and a 1.95 percent decrease in the cost of importing petroleum through Dar es Salaam Port.
This means that in Dar es Salaam, petrol now costs TZS 2,752 per litre, down from TZS 2,807, while diesel is TZS 2,704, down from TZS 2,754. The price of kerosene remains unchanged at TZS 2,774.
In Tanga, petrol will sell for TZS 2,813, a drop from TZS 2,868, while diesel is now TZS 2,766 compared to TZS 2,816 last month. Kerosene prices stay the same at TZS 2,835.
In Mtwara, petrol prices have been cut from TZS 2,899 to TZS 2,844, and diesel from TZS 2,847 to TZS 2,797. Kerosene remains at TZS 2,866.
The continued fall in fuel prices is expected to ease transport costs for commuters and reduce expenses for businesses that depend heavily on fuel, such as manufacturing and agriculture.
Experts also believe it could help stabilize the prices of basic goods, since transport costs play a major role in the cost of food and other essentials.
