Elders in Dodoma Region have been urged to take a leading role in promoting peace, guiding youth, and encouraging civic responsibility as Tanzania approaches the October 29 general election.

Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule told senior citizens that their influence is critical in ensuring harmony, fostering development, and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

“Elders are the custodians of our values and traditions. Your voice can inspire unity, encourage voter participation, and guide young people to make responsible choices,” she said.

Ms. Senyamule highlighted the dramatic transformation Dodoma has undergone over the past decade, noting that the city has grown into a modern and attractive capital that draws both domestic and international investment.

“Ten years ago, Dodoma was very different. Today, it is vibrant and appealing, a city that Tanzanians and global investors alike are keen to engage with. This progress reflects the government’s commitment to development and the well-being of its citizens,” she said.

The RC also emphasised the importance of elders’ health, encouraging them to maintain balanced diets and exercise regularly.

“Healthy and active elders can better serve their communities, mentor the youth, and contribute to national development,” she said.

During the meeting, elders raised concerns about access to healthcare and other social services. Mzee Bakari Chaurembo called for government support in providing health insurance to make medical care more accessible for senior citizens.

In response, Ms. Senyamule pledged to follow up on these concerns, including improving healthcare services and infrastructure such as roads to meet the needs of the elderly.

She also assured that she would engage the National Electoral Commission to ensure special arrangements for elders on voting day, including measures to reduce long queues at polling stations.

The meeting underlined the vital role elders play in Tanzania’s social cohesion and development, positioning them as key advocates for peace, civic engagement, and the mentorship of younger generations ahead of the national elections.
