Residents of Bunda District in Mara Region are experiencing a safer and more secure life along the shores of Lake Victoria, thanks to government-built crocodile-proof barriers.
The structures, constructed under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership, protect communities as they fetch water, bathe, wash, and carry out other daily activities along the lake.
On October 6, 2025, a team from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) visited the new barriers, receiving first-hand feedback from local residents.
Ms. Gabaseki Gervaz, a resident of Mwiseni village in Butimba Ward, said the barriers have reduced fear and saved lives.
“For years, we faced daily risks, and many lives were lost to crocodile attacks. Now we can carry out our daily tasks safely,” she said, appealing for additional structures for livestock and men’s activities.
Mr. Tabingwa Charles Kasao from Nampangala sub-village in Kisorya Ward emphasized that safer access to the lake benefits everyone, including students and traders who rely on the lake for their livelihoods.
Village Chairman Mr. Msiba Chiharata noted that the barriers are critical for community safety and announced fines of TZS 100,000 for anyone attempting to damage them.
The initiative not only safeguards lives but also supports economic activities, demonstrating the government’s commitment to citizen welfare and sustainable development around Lake Victoria.
