Africa is taking the lead in shaping its partnership with Nordic countries, emphasizing innovation, youth empowerment, and sustainable development as pillars for peace and prosperity.
Speaking at the 22nd Session of the Africa-Nordic Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which brought together African nations and five Nordic countries Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and Finland Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, highlighted Africa’s growing role in addressing global challenges and creating opportunities for its people.
“Africa has the talent, creativity, and energy to transform challenges into opportunities. Through strategic partnerships, we can build resilient economies, foster peace, and ensure sustainable growth for generations to come,” Minister Kombo said.
He emphasized the importance of technology and innovation in driving development and preventing conflicts.
“Digital solutions and innovation hubs are not just tools they are engines for societal transformation, creating inclusive prosperity and resilient communities,” he noted.
Minister Kombo also stressed the need to address youth unemployment, calling for targeted investments in job creation, entrepreneurship, and skills development.
“Our young population is Africa’s greatest resource. Equipping them with skills and opportunities ensures they contribute meaningfully to national economies and peaceful societies,” he added.
Closing the meeting, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, highlighted discussions on strengthening cooperation in science, technology, and innovation while amplifying youth participation in policy decisions.
Priority areas identified include clean energy, infrastructure, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable mineral extraction, and employment creation.
“Our aim is to move beyond aid dependency and build partnerships anchored in trade, investment, and mutual growth,” Prof. Murwira said.
He also stressed the need to enhance transport networks, especially railways, and establish a coordination platform to ensure resolutions are implemented effectively.
Launched in 2001, the Africa-Nordic Foreign Ministers’ Meeting has grown into a strategic platform for Africa to showcase leadership, attract strategic investments, and drive sustainable development.
This year’s session reinforced the continent’s commitment to innovation, youth empowerment, and collaborative growth, positioning Africa as a proactive partner on the global stage.
