ACT-Wazalendo presidential candidate Othman Masoud Othman has promised to restore the past glory of Chake Chake town and position Pemba as a hub for trade, investment, and employment.

Addressing a campaign rally at Chanjaani grounds in Chake Chake constituency, Othman said the town, once a vibrant economic and social centre, had lost its prominence due to weak policies and poor governance.

“Chake Chake was the heartbeat of Pemba’s economy, but today it has been reduced to the level of a village. Businesses have stagnated under heavy taxation and the absence of sound development plans,” he said.

He noted that years of neglect had left Pemba appearing marginalised, with its towns losing their historical and economic appeal.

He pledged that, if elected, his administration would improve infrastructure in Chake Chake, Wete, Mkoani and Micheweni, while ensuring equal access to social services, business opportunities and jobs.

“No Zanzibari, especially from Pemba, should be forced to migrate due to economic hardship,” Othman said.

“Our government will ensure that citizens have a conducive environment to work and prosper in their homeland.”he added

The candidate emphasised that Pemba holds vast development potential in fishing, tourism and agriculture, sectors he said could drive inclusive growth if well managed.

He promised to designate Pemba as a special economic zone and expand its profile as a tourist destination, with local communities reaping direct benefits.

He also committed to reviewing the tax regime to ease the burden on small and medium-sized enterprises, arguing that the move would help increase productivity and expand markets.

pledges were welcomed by supporters who described them as practical and forward-looking.

Asha Salim, a small-scale trader, said the policies gave confidence to women entrepreneurs struggling with high taxes and limited access to capital.

Ali Khamis, a youth from Chanjaani, said Othman’s promises reflected awareness of the challenges facing young people and a willingness to address them.

“For the first time, we are hearing a candidate speak directly to our daily struggles jobs, business opportunities and restoring the dignity of Pemba towns,” another supporter said.

Many in attendance agreed that if implemented, the proposals could reposition Pemba as an island of prosperity and opportunity.
