Zanzibar’s judicial system has received a major boost with the inauguration of newly built Regional and District Court facilities in Mazizini, Urban West Region, aimed at improving access to justice and easing court congestion.

Speaking at the launch on September 8, 2025, President Hussein Ali Mwinyi said the facilities represent the government’s broader agenda to strengthen public institutions through modern infrastructure.

He noted that alongside the new courts, plans are underway to construct additional government offices, the House of Representatives, and more judicial facilities to enhance accountability and service delivery.

The Mazizini courts form part of a wider project supported by the World Bank, which will see the construction of five more courts and an Integrated Justice Service Centre across Zanzibar.

According to Dr. Mwinyi, the initiative is designed to expand access to justice, reduce case backlogs, and bring services closer to the people.

He urged judicial officers to ensure the proper maintenance of the new buildings while committing to uphold professionalism in service delivery.

“Modern facilities alone cannot deliver justice what matters is how they are used to serve the public with integrity,” he said.

The President commended the Judiciary of Tanzania and CRJE–East Africa, the firm behind the design and construction, for delivering high-standard infrastructure that meets the growing needs of the justice sector.

Legal analysts view the development as a step toward addressing long-standing challenges, including delays in case hearings and overcrowded courtrooms, which have affected public confidence in the judicial system.
