Tanzania eyes stronger economic ties with Japan through new envoy

Tanzania is seeking to deepen its economic and cultural partnership with Japan as the country’s new ambassador, Anderson Mutatembwa, prepares to take up his post in Tokyo.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, who met the envoy in Dodoma yesterday, said Japan offers vast opportunities for Tanzania to expand trade, attract investment, and strengthen people-to-people ties. He urged Mr Mutatembwa to make economic diplomacy his top priority.

“Japan is a strategic partner with advanced technology and strong financial capacity. Tanzania must tap into this relationship to grow investment, access wider markets for our products, and boost tourism,” said the Prime Minister.

Mr Majaliwa noted that Tanzanians living in Japan could also play a vital role in building stronger economic links between the two nations if properly engaged.

Tourism promotion is another area high on the agenda. With Japan’s outbound tourism industry ranking among the largest in the world, the Prime Minister said Tanzania should position itself as a preferred destination for Japanese travelers.

The directive also extends to cultural diplomacy. Mr Majaliwa encouraged the new envoy to promote Kiswahili in Japan, underscoring the importance of language in shaping Tanzania’s identity abroad.

For decades, Japan has been one of Tanzania’s most reliable development partners, supporting infrastructure projects, human capital development, and industrial growth.

The new posting gives Dar es Salaam an opportunity to align that cooperation with its current push for investment-led growth.
