Uhuru-Torch leader champions use of clean cooking energy in Chato

The National Uhuru Torch leader, Ismail Ali Ussi, has urged residents to adopt clean cooking energy to protect their health and conserve the environment.

Ussi made the appeal on September 6, 2025, during the distribution of more than 500 six-kilogram gas cylinders to households in Chato District, Geita Region.

The initiative, implemented by the Rural Energy Agency (REA), is part of the National Strategy for Clean Cooking Energy, which aims for over 80 percent of Tanzanians to use clean cooking energy by 2034.

“Everyone should become an ambassador for this campaign to safeguard the health of our communities and protect our environment, which has suffered from deforestation caused by traditional cooking fuels,” Ussi said.

Residents welcomed the initiative, praising the government and REA for providing modern cooking solutions.

Village leaders pledged to actively encourage the use of clean energy among residents.

“I will continue to urge households to switch from wood and charcoal to clean energy such as gas. I will also establish committees in each sub-village to reach families still using firewood and guide them to adopt clean cooking energy,” said Juma Nzihilabike, Chairman of Musasa Village.

REA Project Engineer Francis Manyama said the agency continues to implement the vision of President Samia Suluhu Hassan through projects distributing gas cylinders and subsidized modern stoves, aiming to promote safe, environmentally friendly cooking practices across the country.
