Farmers and residents in Kilosa and Kilombero districts are set to benefit from a major road maintenance initiative spearheaded by the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) in partnership with Kilombero Sugar Company (KSC).
A new Road Fund has been established to rehabilitate 206 kilometers of critical transport roads outside Kilombero plantations, starting in the 2025/26 financial year.
The roads are essential for moving sugarcane to KSC’s K1, K2, and K4 factories, but they also serve local communities, connecting villages to markets, schools, and health facilities.
Of the total roads, 124.90 kilometers are in Kilombero District and 81.70 kilometers in Kilosa District. Priority will be given to the sections that are most vital for transport and community access.
“The upgraded roads will make it easier for farmers to deliver sugarcane efficiently, while improving daily life for residents along these routes,” said a TARURA official.
“This initiative demonstrates how public-private partnerships can drive development and benefit local communities.”he added
UNITRANS Tanzania Ltd has been contracted to carry out the maintenance works, which are expected to enhance safety, reduce travel times, and open new opportunities for trade and local businesses.
By linking economic growth with community development, this initiative reflects a model for how government agencies and private companies can work together to improve rural infrastructure and livelihoods in Morogoro and beyond.
