Tanzania launches nationwide campaign to protect youth from drug abuse

Tanzania Police Force has rolled out a nationwide education campaign to safeguard young people from the dangers of drug abuse.

The initiative focuses on reaching youth in their everyday environments, including local hangouts and social spots, to raise awareness about the risks of using illegal substances.

Drug abuse has been linked to the destruction of young people’s health, dreams, and future opportunities.

It also undermines moral values and fuels criminal behavior, often resulting in arrests and imprisonment.

Police Inspector Elisha Rukwavu, the Ward Police Officer for Isongo, explained during an awareness session in Ulanga District, Morogoro Region, that peer pressure and lack of knowledge about the real harms of drugs are key factors pushing youth toward substance abuse.

“Drug abuse does not only harm your body and mind, but it can also ruin your life and the lives of those around you,” Inspector Rukwavu said.

The campaign encourages young people to support one another and act as guardians for their communities by reporting suspicious activities and avoiding involvement in drug-related behaviors.

Police officials say this approach is critical for preventing the spread of drug abuse and keeping communities safe.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Tanzania Police Force to engage citizens directly in protecting youth and promoting healthy lifestyles across the country.
