Tanzanian mining labs urged to adopt local GST crucibles to boost gold assay efficiency

By The Respondent Reporter

Mining laboratories across Tanzania have been encouraged to use locally-made crucibles from the Geological Survey and Mining Research Institute (GST) to improve the efficiency of gold sample testing.

The appeal came on September 25, 2025, from Gideon Nshange, Chief Artisan at GST, during the 8th National Mining Technology Fair at Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan Grounds in Bombambili, Geita Region.

Stakeholders and laboratory technicians visiting the GST exhibition were briefed on how these crucibles can transform gold assay operations.

“These crucibles are built to withstand extreme heat, up to 1,400°C, making them reliable for repeated use. They can handle more than three cycles of gold sample melting, saving laboratories both time and money,” said Nshange.

He noted that demand for the crucibles has steadily grown, with many first-time users becoming regular clients due to their durability and efficiency.

For the past 15 years, GST has been producing these crucibles in various sizes, from D60 to D65, serving both domestic laboratories and international clients.

By promoting their use, GST aims to strengthen local capacity, reduce dependence on imported equipment, and help Tanzanian laboratories deliver more accurate and cost-effective gold assay results.
