Tanzania pushes for stronger African voice at climate summit in Addis Ababa

Tanzania has underlined its commitment to the global climate agenda as Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the Second Africa Heads of State and Government Summit on Climate Change.

The high-level gathering, taking place today, brings together African leaders to shape a unified position on climate action and financing ahead of major international negotiations.

Permanent Secretary in the Vice President’s Office, Engineer Cyprian Luhemeja, joined Dr. Mpango in Addis Ababa, where he took part in final preparations for the summit.

His presence signals Tanzania’s determination to ensure that the continent’s concerns, particularly on adaptation financing, renewable energy and technology transfer, are firmly addressed.

For Tanzania, the summit comes at a critical time. The country continues to grapple with the effects of climate change, including recurring droughts, destructive floods and disruptions to agriculture.

These challenges threaten livelihoods and economic stability, making global support for adaptation and resilience-building a pressing priority.

Officials say Dr. Mpango will use the platform to call for fair and predictable climate financing mechanisms, alongside stronger African unity in climate diplomacy.

The meeting is expected to produce a common African position that will be carried to global forums such as COP30 in Brazil later this year.

By actively participating at the summit, Tanzania aims not only to advance its national climate agenda but also to strengthen continental solidarity in pushing for solutions that reflect Africa’s unique vulnerabilities and potential.
