Tanzania champions climate action and stronger commonwealth leadership in Africa

By The Respondent Reporter

Tanzania is taking a leading role in shaping the Commonwealth’s agenda in Africa, leveraging its climate resilience and sustainable development initiatives to guide regional priorities.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, held bilateral talks with Mr. Jeremy Cross, Director of the King’s Foundation, in London on September 10, 2025, to discuss strategies for revitalising the Commonwealth through practical initiatives and stronger leadership.

Ambassador Kombo highlighted Tanzania’s achievements in forestry management, carbon credit projects, and integrating energy and population planning into climate strategies.

He proposed a core group of African Commonwealth nations including Tanzania, Zambia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Rwanda—to share best practices on sustainable urban growth, climate resilience, and economic opportunities.

The discussions also called for a more visible and proactive Commonwealth Secretary-General, supported by a unifying legacy theme under the patronage of His Majesty King Charles III.

Climate change and sustainable development were identified as priority areas, while educational programmes were recommended to strengthen Commonwealth identity among youth.

Both sides committed to advancing the core group collaboration, mobilising funding, and enhancing outreach across Africa, positioning Tanzania as a key driver in ensuring the Commonwealth remains relevant, effective, and impactful on the continent.
