Tanzania, through its Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabiti Kombo, represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the 1,303rd meeting of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council.

The session was held on September 24, 2025, in New York, United States.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Kombo reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to working with development partners in promoting peace and resolving conflicts, guided by diplomacy.

He highlighted that African leaders recognize the progress made in strengthening peace and security infrastructure through the African Peace and Security Architecture and Good Governance frameworks.

“This initiative has created platforms for knowledge exchange among AU member states, reinforcing solidarity and Africa’s shared commitment to achieving sustainable peace,” Minister Kombo said.

The minister also recalled Africa’s long-term goal, set during the AU’s 50th anniversary in 2013, to end wars by 2020 under the Silencing the Guns initiative.

He noted that the deadline has now been extended to 2030 to give the continent more time to achieve lasting peace.

Chairperson of the AU Peace and Security Council, Angolan President João Lourenço, urged member states to strengthen efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts, warning that failure to act could threaten peace, stability, and the implementation of Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

President Lourenço also stressed the need for increased financial contributions to the revitalized African Peace Fund and collaboration with the United Nations to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2719.

He said these steps would provide a solid resource base to support peace initiatives across Africa.

The AU Peace and Security Council, established in 2004, is tasked with maintaining peace, security, and stability across the continent.

It is responsible for preventing conflicts, resolving disputes, and ensuring long-term solutions that promote sustainable development and prosperity.

The meeting brought together all AU Peace and Security Council member states, the African Union Commission, and UN representatives.

It took place on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly under the theme: “Revitalizing Efforts to Prevent and Resolve Conflicts in Africa.”
