Gairo district drives commercial farming push in Morogoro

By Lilian Kasenene, Morogoro

Morogoro Region is stepping up efforts to move farmers from subsistence to commercial farming, aiming to increase incomes and strengthen the local economy.

Regional Commissioner Adam Malima spoke to journalists ahead of the “Samia Commercial Agriculture Expo 2025,” which will run in Gairo District from September 28 to October 4.

The annual expo provides farmers with training and practical insights, and this year the focus will be on promoting commercial agriculture.

“Gairo is leading the way in agricultural transformation,” RC Malima said. “Farmers here are benefiting directly from reforms that turn their crops into sources of income.”

He explained that the region is educating farmers on how any crop can become commercial if production exceeds household needs, helping communities move away from subsistence farming. Malima added that Tanzania is making significant progress toward becoming a major agricultural producer in Africa, with Gairo at the forefront.

The expo will showcase strategic crops such as cloves, avocados, and ginger. It will also provide farmers with knowledge on modern farming techniques, technology, value addition, and networking opportunities to access larger markets.

RC Malima emphasized that the Sixth Phase Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, is committed to making Morogoro a leader in agricultural reforms.

He urged farmers, livestock keepers, fishers, and other stakeholders to attend the expo, gain skills, and take advantage of new market opportunities.

He also encouraged citizens to participate in the October 2025 General Election, reminding that voting is a constitutional right and urging media to promote a peaceful and orderly process.

Gairo District Commissioner Japhari Kubecha noted that the expo is vital for linking stakeholders across the agricultural value chain, increasing productivity, and meeting international standards.

The “Samia Commercial Agriculture Expo 2025” will open on September 28 and run until October 4.
