Tanzania has pledged to step up efforts to modernise its livestock industry in line with Africa’s drive to strengthen food systems and sustainable development.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Ms. Agnes Meena, delivered the country’s position on Thursday at the Livestock Ministerial Deep Dive, a high-level session of the Africa Food Systems Forum taking place in Dakar, Senegal.

The discussions brought together ministers and senior officials from across the continent to explore priorities, challenges and opportunities for livestock development.

The focus was on identifying areas for collaboration to overcome common hurdles facing the sector.

Ms. Meena outlined Tanzania’s priorities and progress, citing government-led reforms that are improving productivity, market access and rural livelihoods.

She said the initiatives were already yielding results, reinforcing livestock as a key driver of food security and economic growth.

She also highlighted Tanzania’s willingness to expand partnerships with development stakeholders, stressing the importance of regional cooperation in tackling issues such as climate change, animal health and technology adoption.

“Tanzania is committed to advancing livestock transformation as a central pillar of food systems and sustainable development across Africa,” she said.

The session is part of the wider forum, which is Africa’s largest platform for dialogue on food and agriculture, bringing together governments, private sector players, farmers and development partners.
