Tanzania’s bean farmers are reaping the benefits of improved market access and rising prices under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership, with exports and earnings showing strong growth over the past five years.
Official figures show that the price of beans has climbed from Sh501 per kilogram in 2020 to Sh2,430 in 2025.
At the same time, export volumes rose from 123,000 tonnes worth USD 80 million (Sh187 billion) in 2020 to 180,000 tonnes valued at USD 220 million (Sh570 billion) this year.
The government attributes this growth to deliberate efforts by President Samia to open reliable markets for local farmers, particularly through the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange (TMX), which connects producers with competitive international buyers.
With continued government support and global demand for beans on the rise, the sector is expected to contribute even more to Tanzania’s economic growth in the coming years.
