Tanzania and China strengthen historic ties on 76th anniversary

Dar es Salaam witnessed a major diplomatic celebration as Tanzania joined China to mark 76 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The event, held in the city with grandeur, brought together government officials, diplomats, development partners, and invited guests.

Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, was the guest of honor.

China’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, highlighted the long-standing vision of cooperation between the two nations.

Tanzania and China share a historic relationship built on solidarity, mutual respect, and development. Since the era of Tanzania’s founding father, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, and China’s Chairman Mao Zedong, the two countries have worked together to advance social, economic, and political progress.

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), launched in the 1970s, remains a key symbol of this partnership and continues to be a major trade and transport link in Southern Africa.

Kombo said Tanzania remains committed to strengthening strategic ties with China. He noted that the partnership supports national development, social programs, and economic growth.

He added that Tanzania will continue cooperation in investment, trade, education, and technology, while deepening people-to-people connections to reinforce bilateral relations.

Ambassador Chen highlighted the growing cooperation, which extends beyond politics to the economy, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and technology.

He cited major joint projects, including road networks, ports, energy, agriculture, and industrial developments, as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative aimed at boosting trade and shared growth.

Tanzania has gained significantly from its partnership with China. Besides TAZARA, modern roads, bridges, and port upgrades are results of this cooperation.

China has also supported Tanzania’s health sector with hospitals and medical equipment and education through scholarships for Tanzanian students.

The 76th anniversary of China’s founding is not only a celebration of history but also a reminder of decades of friendship and cooperation.

Tanzania and China continue to strengthen ties, focusing on development and the well-being of their citizens.
