Ruhudji hydropower project to cost TZS 1.5 Trillion, completion set for 2028

The government has advanced the implementation of the Ruhudji Hydroelectric Power Project in Njombe Region, which will generate 358 megawatts upon completion.

The project, valued at approximately Sh1.5 trillion, is expected to be finalized in 2028. Once operational, it will significantly strengthen Tanzania’s energy mix by boosting hydropower reserves, which currently account for 36 percent of the country’s total electricity generation.

Officials say the project is part of ongoing efforts under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration to expand power generation capacity and ensure reliable supply for households, industries, and future investments.

The Ruhudji project is also anticipated to contribute to national energy security while complementing other large-scale developments such as the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project.
