The Rural Energy Agency (REA) has launched modern energy-saving stoves designed to use less charcoal, cut harmful emissions, and support environmental conservation.
The stoves, locally known as majiko banifu, are on display at the 8th National Mining Technology Exhibition taking place at the Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan grounds in Geita. A total of 1,000 units have been made available to the public at a government-subsidized price of Sh6,195, down from the original retail cost of Sh41,300.
REA experts explained that the stoves are built with advanced technology that reduces charcoal consumption while limiting carbon monoxide emissions, which pose serious health risks to users.
The stoves are also durable, easy to operate, and designed to provide a longer service life compared to conventional charcoal stoves.
“These stoves represent a cleaner and more sustainable cooking option. By consuming less charcoal, they reduce household expenses while contributing to forest conservation,” said REA officials during the exhibition.
In Geita Region, distribution is being handled by Geita Millenium Star Company Limited. The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to making clean cooking solutions affordable, promoting public health, and tackling environmental challenges linked to deforestation.
The introduction of the stoves is part of Tanzania’s broader push to expand access to modern energy technologies, improve livelihoods, and protect natural resources.
