Tanzania’s National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) has rolled out a digital platform aimed at improving environmental compliance across urban development projects, signaling the country’s push to integrate technology into regulatory oversight.
The platform, branded the ‘Mazingira App’, is designed to monitor adherence to environmental and urban planning standards in real time.
Acting Director of Compliance and Legal Implementation at NEMC, Jamal Baruti, said the four-week initiative will allow authorities to conduct inspections of ongoing development projects, with a focus on waste management, responsible land use, and water resource protection.
“The Mazingira App enables precise tracking of compliance with environmental, public health, and workplace safety regulations critical factors in sustainable urban growth,” he said.
The app also addresses long-standing challenges, including illegal waste disposal, pollution, and unregulated land use, which have historically undermined development outcomes and investment confidence.
North Eastern Regional Manager Glory Kombe highlighted the importance of collaboration between NEMC and local government authorities.
“Ensuring that projects adhere to Environmental and Social Impact Assessment requirements and maintain overall environmental integrity is essential for sustainable development and investor confidence,” she said.
The Mazingira App streamlines project registration, data collection, and monitoring, allowing authorities to manage development projects efficiently while reinforcing transparency and regulatory compliance.
Analysts say the initiative could enhance the attractiveness of Tanzania’s urban development sector to environmentally conscious investors by reducing regulatory risks.
By leveraging digital oversight, Tanzania positions itself as a forward-looking market in East Africa, combining regulatory enforcement with technological innovation to safeguard both natural resources and public health.
