The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has stepped up efforts to protect Tanzania’s natural resources by training government lawyers on the Environmental Management Act and its practical enforcement.

The initiative included participants from the Office of the Attorney General and the Office of the Chief Parliamentary Draftsman.

The training, held on September 3, 2025, was designed to enhance legal expertise and improve coordination in the implementation of environmental laws across the country.

Speaking at the event, NEMC Director General Dr. Immaculate Semesi highlighted the importance of equipping legal officers with the knowledge needed to support effective environmental governance.

“We organized this training to build a strong legal understanding of environmental management and ensure laws are applied consistently,” she said.

Attorney General Hamza S. Johari, who officially opened the session, urged lawyers to act as vigilant guardians of the environment.

He noted that challenges, such as limited awareness of environmental issues, can be turned into opportunities by strengthening the enforcement role of NEMC.

“Our responsibility is to transform these challenges into effective action to safeguard the nation’s natural resources,” he said.

The training reflects a growing recognition that robust legal support is critical to enforcing environmental laws and promoting sustainable development in Tanzania.
