The National Open Swimming Championship concluded on September 14 at the International School of Tanganyika (IST) pool in Masaki, Dar es Salaam, after two days of fierce competition that began on September 13.

Swimmers from various clubs and schools put on impressive performances, with some breaking long-standing records and setting new benchmarks, signalling significant progress for the sport in Tanzania.

Speaking after the closing ceremony, Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) President David Mwasyoge expressed satisfaction with the high standard displayed by the athletes, especially the youth. He described the results as a promising sign for the future of swimming in the country.

“I am thrilled to see our young swimmers shine and even break previous records. This demonstrates that Tanzania is on the right track in developing and promoting the sport,” Mr. Mwasyoge said.

TSA Competition Secretary Frank Lusawa praised all participants, noting that their efforts not only brought personal glory but also inspired hope for swimming in Tanzania.

“It is encouraging to witness athletes performing at such high levels with discipline and determination. This is a major step forward for swimming in the country, and we expect even greater achievements in the future,” said Mr. Lusawa.

Both leaders thanked stakeholders, coaches, parents, and athletes for supporting the event and pledged that TSA would continue collaborating with partners to ensure swimming continues to grow.

The championship has left a strong mark on Tanzania’s sporting calendar and is expected to nurture new talent while preparing a strong national team for future international competitions.
