Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango has underscored the need for stronger cooperation between government and religious institutions to better serve communities and address shared challenges.

Speaking on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the opening of the United Evangelical Mission (UEM) General Assembly at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) Mbezi Beach parish in Dar es Salaam, Dr. Mpango said faith-based organizations are critical partners in nation building.

He stressed that joint efforts are vital in confronting misleading theologies, poverty, environmental destruction, and interfaith tensions.

“The government of Tanzania will continue to uphold freedom of worship and ensure citizens enjoy peace and stability,” he said.

The Vice President urged delegates to prioritize urgent global concerns, including biodiversity protection, sustainable resource use, and climate change mitigation.

He warned that scientific reports predict human life will decline by 2030 if environmental degradation and pollution remain unchecked.

Dr. Mpango also encouraged churches to invest strategically in social services to reduce dependence on external donors.

He praised the ELCT for its ongoing support to people with special needs, particularly children with disabilities and those with mental health conditions, saying such initiatives promote inclusivity.

The UEM Assembly, held under the theme “The Log in Our Eye: Discrimination in the Church and Diakonia,” has drawn delegates from Africa, Europe, and Asia to reflect on human dignity, confront discrimination, and address systemic barriers affecting marginalized groups.
