Security forces in collaboration with the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) have destroyed several acres of marijuana farms in a special operation carried out inside the Ukwiva Forest Reserve in Kilosa District.
The operation, brought together officers from the Office of the District Security Officer (DSO), the Kilosa Police through the Office of the Officer Commanding District (OCD), representatives from the District Administrative Secretary’s Office, militia units, and TFS staff. The plantations discovered within the forest were set ablaze on site.
Kilosa District Police Commander, SSP Janeth D. Nganda, who led the operation, warned residents against engaging in unlawful activities inside forest reserves.
“We issue a strong warning to all those cultivating illegally within protected forests. The government will not tolerate activities that endanger forest safety and undermine the nation’s natural resources,” she said.
TFS Eastern Zone Commander, PCO Mathew Ntilicha, said the patrol was part of ongoing efforts to protect forest reserves from being converted into illegal farms.
He added that the operation also aimed to educate communities on the importance of preserving the environment.
“Forest reserves are national assets that must be safeguarded for the benefit of both present and future generations. Similar operations will continue across the country to strengthen conservation and curb environmental crimes,” he noted.
The Ukwiva Forest Reserve, one of the largest in Kilosa District, has long faced threats from illegal activities, including farming and logging.
Authorities say the destruction of marijuana plantations is a critical step in reinforcing forest protection and preserving biodiversity.
