The expansion and modernization of Lake Manyara Airport is set to transform tourism and economic activities in Karatu District and the wider Arusha Region, following a TZS 88.5 billion government investment under President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The project, implemented by Beijing Construction Engineering Group Company, will widen the runway to 30 meters and extend it to 1,500 meters, enabling larger aircraft, including ATR 42 planes with 72-passenger capacity, to land safely.

It also includes a modern passenger terminal, aircraft and vehicle parking areas, access roads, perimeter fencing, airfield lighting, navigation equipment, an air traffic control tower, and a meteorological building.

Arusha Regional Commissioner, CPA Amos Gabriel Makalla, inspected the works on Saturday, September 20, 2025, and praised the government’s commitment to infrastructure development.

“Lake Manyara Airport is a gateway for tourists visiting Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and other attractions. Its completion will boost tourism, create business opportunities, and improve livelihoods for local communities,” he said.

Engineer Reginald Massawe, Arusha Tanroads Regional Manager, said the upgrades will enhance safety and increase the airport’s capacity, enabling it to accommodate more passengers and aircraft.

“The improved airport will strengthen regional connectivity, making it easier for tourists and investors to access northern Tanzania,” he added.

Project supervisors confirmed that the contractor has mobilized on site, while consulting engineers continue reviewing detailed designs.

The project’s scope has also been extended to include a 60-meter bridge over the Athumani River on the Mto wa Mbu–Loliondo road and a triple-box culvert at Manyara Kibaoni along the Makuyuni–Ngorongoro road.

Once complete, the upgraded Lake Manyara Airport is expected to increase tourist arrivals, stimulate local businesses, and contribute significantly to Arusha Region’s economic growth, positioning the area as a key hub for tourism and trade.
