Smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, and poor dietary habits are pushing more Tanzanians toward heart disease, medical experts warn.
Dr. Lioba Joseph, a specialist in internal medicine at Mbeya Referral Hospital, highlighted these risks ahead of World Heart Day.
She noted that people who consume alcohol excessively, smoke regularly, and fail to exercise are particularly vulnerable to cardiovascular conditions.
“Lifestyle choices play a major role in heart health. Those who ignore physical activity and indulge in harmful habits are significantly increasing their risk of developing heart disease,” Dr. Lioba said.
Heart disease currently accounts for 13 percent of all deaths in Tanzania. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that cardiovascular diseases claim 20.5 million lives each year.
To mark World Heart Day, Mbeya Referral Hospital, in partnership with The One Heart Tanzania/USA, will provide free screening and treatment services for both children and adults.
The event is scheduled for Monday, September 29, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at City Park Garden in Mbeya.
The initiative aims not only to detect heart conditions early but also to educate the public on the importance of healthy living, including balanced diets, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive drinking.
