Employers across Tanzania have been urged to put in place clear systems that provide regular training to their workers as a way of improving productivity and reducing conflicts in workplaces.
The call was made yesterday by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability), Ms. Zuhura Yunus, when she officiated at the opening of a seminar for employers and TUGHE branch leaders at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC).
Ms. Yunus said training remains central to equipping both employers and workers with a shared understanding of workplace rules, regulations and labour laws.
“When employees and employers are fully aware of the procedures, guidelines, laws and regulations that govern employment relations and public service, it becomes harder for them to contravene them. In most cases, mistakes occur simply because people are unaware they are breaking the law,” she explained.
She also cautioned employers against blocking workers from exercising their right to join trade unions, noting that the practice amounts to a violation of employees’ rights.
“The government will not hesitate to take firm action against any employer who is found to be denying workers the freedom to unionise,” she warned.
Earlier, TUGHE Secretary General, Cde. Hery Mkunda, said attendance at the seminar has continued to grow since the initiative began in 2018.
He said this year more than 800 participants are expected, drawn from ministries, government agencies, regional secretariats, local government authorities, as well as public and private health institutions.
“The training is designed to provide employers, employees and union members with knowledge on workplace issues while strengthening industrial harmony and reducing disputes,” Cde. Mkunda said.
The opening ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including Labour Commissioner Suzan Mkangwa, Justice Yose Mlyambina of the High Court Labour Division, Registrar of Trade Unions and Employers’ Associations, Mr. Vallensi Wambali, Director General of the Commission for Mediation and Arbitration (CMA), Mr. Usekelege Mpulla, TUGHE National Chairperson, Cde. Joel Kaminyoge, and National Vice Chairperson, Dr. Jane Madete.
The four-day seminar will conclude on Thursday, September 18, 2025, with participants expected to engage in domestic tourism activities, including a visit to Mount Kilimanjaro, after which they will be awarded certificates of participation.
