Dr. Lekashingo urges Tanzanians to tap mining sector opportunities

The Chairperson of the Minerals Commission, Dr. Janet Lekashingo, has urged Tanzanians to actively explore opportunities in the mining sector to boost their income and contribute to national growth.

Speaking after visiting booths at the 9th National Mining Technology Expo at Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan Grounds in Bombambili, Dr. Lekashingo said the sector is a key driver of Tanzania’s economy and should not be left solely to foreign investors.

“Tanzanians must participate in all aspects of mining—from research and extraction to processing, trade, and service provision. This way, we generate income and help grow the national GDP,” she said.

The tour included top officials from the Minerals Commission, such as Commissioners Theonestina Mwasha and Dr. Theresia Numbi; Directors Venance Kasiki and Idfonce Masoud; and Geita Regional Mining Officer, Samwel Shoo.

Dr. Lekashingo highlighted that large-scale mines have opened avenues for supplying equipment, food, security, protective gear, and employment. “These are opportunities for us; we must not hesitate to seize them,” she said, adding that integrity and quality work are key to sustaining investor trust.

At the expo, the delegation also observed initiatives by the Ministry of Minerals and its institutions, including public education on mining laws, geological research, licensing processes, mineral trade, value addition, and environmental management.

The Minerals Commission said the event serves as a platform to connect citizens with investors, ensuring the mining sector benefits more Tanzanians through jobs, business, and government revenue.
