CAF slaps Simba with TZS200 million fine, fans barred from Sunday clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined Simba SC Sh200 million and imposed a ban on fans attending their crucial CAF Champions League return leg match against Gaborone United this Sunday at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Confirming the development on Friday, Simba’s Media and Communications Manager, Ahmed Ally, said the punishment follows incidents in previous continental fixtures, including unruly fan behavior and use of fireworks.

“In the game against Al Masry, a fan invaded the pitch while others started fires in the stands, attracting a fine of $50,000 (about Sh120 million). Later, in the CAF Confederation Cup final against RS Berkane, fireworks were set off inside the stadium, leading to another $35,000 fine. Altogether, CAF has fined us $85,000, which is around Sh200 million,” Ally explained.

He stressed that the absence of supporters would be a heavier blow than the monetary penalty, warning fans to refrain from misconduct that puts the club at risk.

“We cannot afford such actions. Let us take responsibility as fans—if you see someone attempting to light fireworks or enter the pitch, stop them. This ban means we play without fans, which is a huge loss for the team and for our revenue,” he cautioned.

In response, Simba has teamed up with Mo Cola to organize a special fan-viewing event at MwembeYanga grounds, where a giant screen will be set up for supporters to watch the match. The club has encouraged fans to attend in their red jerseys to show solidarity.

Meanwhile, the team has intensified preparations for the decisive fixture. After their Mainland Premier League game against Fountain Gate, the squad immediately entered camp ahead of the second leg. Simba carries a 1-0 advantage from the first-leg tie played in Botswana on September 20.

“All players are in good shape, except Mohammed Bajaber and Abdulrazak Hamza, who will miss out. Preparations are going smoothly, and the squad has two final training sessions before match day,” Ally confirmed.

Gaborone United arrived in Dar es Salaam early Friday morning, while referees from Niger have been assigned to officiate the tie, scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
