The Tanzanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a conducive business environment, promising to collaborate closely with Airtel Tanzania in advancing the nation’s digital transformation and achieving Vision 2050.
Treasury Registrar Nehemiah Mchechu made the remarks following high-level discussions with Airtel Global Chairman and CEO Sunil Bharti Mittal and Airtel Tanzania Managing Director Charles Kamoto at the Treasury Registrar’s Office in Dar es Salaam.
The meeting focused on strengthening digital connectivity, expanding financial inclusion, and promoting socio-economic growth across the country.
“Today marks a significant milestone,” said Mchechu. “We welcomed senior executives from Airtel Global to discuss not only Airtel Tanzania’s operations but also the broader development of the telecommunications sector and digital systems nationwide. The government is prepared to match Airtel’s commitment by ensuring that the right policies, infrastructure, and investment environment are in place.”
Speaking on behalf of Airtel, Mr. Mittal reiterated the company’s dedication to deepening investment in Tanzania’s digital infrastructure.
“Our discussions explored further investments in networks and fibre, alongside accelerating digital penetration in Tanzania. The government’s 49 per cent stake in Airtel Tanzania reflects that the company belongs to the people of this country, and we are determined to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s digital economy,” he said.
Mr. Mittal emphasized the importance of digital frameworks in rapidly growing economies like Tanzania.
“Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s commitment to Vision 2050, where digital connectivity and services play a central role, aligns perfectly with our goals. Airtel is committed to supporting this vision through significant investment and collaboration.”he added
The CEO’s visit forms part of a broader engagement with government and regulatory bodies, including the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) and the Ministry of Finance and Planning, aimed at accelerating the country’s digital transformation journey.
