TFS steps up risk management to protect Southern Highlands forests

By Our Correspondent, Iringa

The Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) Agency has intensified efforts to protect forest resources in the Southern Highlands by strengthening its risk management systems.

Meeting at the VETA Hall in Iringa on August 25, 2025, forest officers and rangers gathered to update the agency’s Risk Register for the 2025/2026 financial year.

The register is a key tool for identifying, assessing, and mitigating threats that could derail conservation goals.

Senior Conservator from TFS Headquarters in Dodoma, Marium Mrutu, said the review is aimed at anticipating risks early and putting in place measures to address them before they escalate.

“When we identify risks early, we position ourselves to prevent major losses. This is the best way to protect national resources and ensure forests benefit all Tanzanians,” she said.

The session was facilitated by PCR Roland Peter Mlingi from the TFS Eastern Zone, who underscored the importance of maintaining an updated Risk Register as part of good governance and accountability in public institutions.

According to Mrutu, the exercise reflects TFS’s commitment to safeguarding forest resources for social, economic, and environmental gains.

It also strengthens forest management systems, secures government revenue, and fosters collaboration with communities near protected areas.

By reinforcing risk management, TFS aims to ensure that Tanzania’s forests remain a sustainable asset for current and future generations.
