Tanzanian graduates of the World Maritime University (WMU) have officially launched the WMU Tanzania Alumni Association, a platform aimed at uniting alumni to advance maritime development in the country.
Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, President of WMU, said he was pleased to see Tanzanian students coming together to form the association.
He stressed that collaboration among alumni is key to applying the knowledge and skills they gained at the university.
“By working together and sharing ideas, alumni can contribute to building a progressive and sustainable maritime community,” he said.
Dr. Gerson Kumbuka, Secretary-General of the association, noted that it will allow alumni to provide input on maritime policies and environmental management before regulations are formalized.
“Our graduates hold senior positions in government and the private sector, with expertise in maritime safety, environmental management, and law. The association will help harness their experience for national benefit,” he said.
Nahoza Gilbert Mokiwa, a former maritime instructor, praised the initiative, saying it will promote collaboration and sustainable maritime development.
“I congratulate the leaders who have dedicated themselves to managing this association. I am confident it will create meaningful change in the sector,” he said.
The Director of Safety and Environment at the Ministry of Transport added that WMU equips students with knowledge in navigation, maritime law, safety, and environmental management.
He said the alumni association will ensure graduates can collectively implement their expertise effectively.
The WMU Tanzania Alumni Association is expected to strengthen professional networks, support policy development, and drive progress in the country’s maritime sector.
