Tanzania participates in TICAD 9 summit in Yokohama, Japan

The United Republic of Tanzania is among African Union member states taking part in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), which opened today, August 20, 2025, in Yokohama, Japan.

The summit was inaugurated with remarks from Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba; João Lourenço, President of Angola and Chairperson of the African Union; UN Secretary-General António Guterres; African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf; UNDP Acting Administrator Haoliang Xu; and Makhtar Diop, Executive Director of the International Finance Corporation representing the World Bank President.

In his opening address, Prime Minister Ishiba emphasized Japan’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with African countries, focusing on economic growth, social development, and peace and security.

Japan pledged to support Africa in tackling unsustainable debt, enhancing continental integration, and advancing regional cooperation through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). 

The country also committed to boosting Africa’s private sector through collaboration with Japanese businesses and promoting human resource development, especially for youth and women, through training programs, startups, and initiatives to achieve Universal Health Coverage.
